What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting, positional dominance, and submission techniques. Unlike striking-based martial arts, BJJ emphasizes using leverage, timing, and technique to control and submit an opponent—even if they are larger or stronger.
BJJ was developed in Brazil by the Gracie family after adapting traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. It gained worldwide recognition in the 1990s when Royce Gracie used it to defeat larger opponents in the early UFC competitions. Today, BJJ is one of the core components of mixed martial arts (MMA) and one of the most effective martial arts for real-world self-defense.

Why Train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Self-Defense That Works
Most self-defense situations end up on the ground. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to stay calm, escape bad positions, control an opponent, and protect yourself without relying on size or aggression. These are practical skills that can save your life.
A Workout With Purpose
BJJ provides a full-body workout that improves strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination. Unlike running on a treadmill or lifting weights alone, every training session has a purpose: learning technique, solving positional problems, and improving your skills.
Problem-Solving Under Pressure
Jiu-Jitsu is often called “physical chess.” Every position, escape, and submission requires you to think ahead, read your opponent’s movements, and adjust in real time. That mental engagement keeps training interesting and challenging for years.
A Supportive Training Community
North Texas MMA has students of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Beginners train alongside experienced practitioners in a culture that values effort, respect, and consistent improvement. You will find training partners who push you to improve while helping you learn.
Gi vs. No-Gi: What’s the Difference?
Gi (Traditional BJJ) uses a uniform (gi) that allows for grips on the collar, sleeves, and pants. This adds layers of control, submissions, and strategy based on grip fighting and leverage.
No-Gi BJJ removes the gi, requiring students to control their opponent using body position, underhooks, and wrestling-style techniques. No-Gi is faster-paced and emphasizes movement, scrambling, and control without fabric grips.
Both styles develop core grappling skills. Many students train both to build a well-rounded game.
Beginner-Friendly Fundamentals Classes
If you are new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, our BJJ Fundamentals class (Tuesday, 7:00 PM) is designed for beginners. This class breaks down essential positions, basic escapes, defensive movement, and foundational submissions in a structured format. Coaches give individualized feedback and ensure students understand the mechanics before advancing.
New students are also welcome in any adult BJJ class. Coaches scale instruction to meet students where they are and help beginners progress safely.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art focused on ground fighting, positional control, and submission techniques. It emphasizes leverage and technique over strength, making it effective for self-defense regardless of size.
Do I need experience to start BJJ?
No. Beginners are welcome. Our fundamentals classes teach basic positions, escapes, and movement patterns in a structured, safe environment.
What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi?
Gi (traditional BJJ) uses a uniform with grips and collar control. No-Gi removes the uniform, focusing on body control and movement similar to wrestling. Both develop grappling skill.
How often should I train?
Most students train 2-4 times per week to build consistency and skill. North Texas MMA offers unlimited classes, so you can train as often as your schedule allows.
Is BJJ good for self-defense?
Yes. BJJ teaches you how to control an opponent, escape bad positions, and defend yourself on the ground, where most real altercations end up.
Can I train if I’m not in shape?
Yes. You don’t need to be in shape to start—training is how you get in shape. Coaches help beginners learn at a safe pace, and intensity can be adjusted to your current fitness level.
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes. Private and semi-private lessons are available for students who want one-on-one instruction, competition preparation, or accelerated learning. Contact us to schedule.
